Discovering Fossils Walk
Charmouth fossil hunt - Sunday 17th August '08

A classic Jurassic fossil hunt!

Join local expert and geologist Chris Pamplin to explore one of the most famous stretches of the Jurassic Coast, between Golden Cap and Lyme Regis, taking in Black Ven.

This classic fossil locality is where Mary Anning found many of her remarkable fossils around 190 years ago! The day will include an informative talk with Chris followed by the fossil hunt (approximately 4 hours). We will explore both sides of the river at Charmouth taking in Stonebarrow and Black Ven. Participants will all have an opportunity to find and keep a selection of Jurassic fossils, including ammonites, belemnites and even marine reptile bones with a bit of luck!

Full details will be provided to participants prior to the event

Start time is 10.30am, Finish apx 3.30pm. There is a cafe or you can bring packed lunch.

What to bring

Please bring suitable clothing for the weather, see Live webcam Lyme Regis for the weather today at Charmouth and Lyme Regis.
Bring water if very hot and sun tan cream.
Walks take place on the beach with boulders and pebbles so stout footwear is advisable.

Do I need a hammer?

The hammer is an essential tool when fossil hunting, but remember,
'Your best tool is your Eyes!' Do not use your hammer to dig in the cliffs.
Hammers are for breaking stones which may contain fossils, which you find loose on the beach.

You can hire a hammer from us for the walk. Please book this in advance.
Hammers , Only brick or geology hammers, no chisels or screwdrivers.

You can telephone 0845 094 3757 to check if the walk is taking place. As yet I have never cancelled a public walk,
unless I am ill I will always come to the beach for the walks. If I am ill I will post this info on the events page.
